Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is a member of the operations team. The successful candidate will develop and implement internal and external resources to support and maintain the following areas: accounting and finance, business planning and budgeting, and the overall financial operations of the organization. DARTNet Institute is a virtual company with geographical dispersion of a research and data management center in Denver, executive and operations management in Kansas City and Chicago, and client services and support in Dallas. This position will be located in Kansas City and requires a remote work site.

The Director of Finance will play a critical role in working with senior leadership in areas of strategic and operational formulation, implementation, monitoring and execution.

This position reports to the chief operating officer.

Responsibilities

Financial Operations:

  • Develop and implement accounting functions that support daily operations, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Manage the annual review or audit process including the relationship with external auditors and the finance and accounting committee of the board of directors.
  • Complete the timely filing of all required tax returns.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process; administer and review all financial plans and budgets.
  • Manage the month end financial process to effectively and accurately report results, critical financial matters, trends, and developments to the senior management team and the finance and audit committee of the board.
  • Develop and communicate reliable measures of organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Direct the financial aspects of the grant/project contract management process and develop a reporting system that monitors financial performance.
  • Assist in the development and submission of research grant budgets and other grant application materials.
  • Monitor, develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure accuracy, timeliness and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in DARTNetís financial operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. in accounting, finance, or related field is required; an MBA and/or CPA is preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of financial operations experience is required; six plus years of broad financial management experience is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of federal grants process (ex: AHRQ, NIH) and all financial requirements including application, reporting, billing, and reconciliation is required.
  • Demonstrable experience with health-care research (ex: PCORI) and health-care grants and all financial requirements including application, reporting, billing, and reconciliation is required.
  • Experience with philanthropic grants process and familiarity with the financial reporting requirements of operational research grants preferred.
  • Experience with financial reporting and audit coordination required.
  • Technology familiarity and savvy with evaluating, overseeing, selecting and using software and installations in support of finance functions, including internal resources and relationships with financial software vendors.
  • Ability to effectively use software for financial management, billing and reporting.
  • A successful track record in establishing priorities; communicating throughout the organization; keen analytic and problem solving skills that support and enable sound financial decision making.
  • Skills and experience in negotiation internally and externally.
  • Team player, willingness to learn, and desire to collaborate across multiple groups.
  • Personal qualities of the highest integrity, discipline, credibility, independent and critical thinking, and mission-focused commitment.

Accounting Clerk

DARTNet Institute is looking for a part-time Accounting Clerk to perform accounting and clerical duties and ensure accuracy of financial records. The successful candidate will be responsible for customer invoicing and ensuring prompt payment of balances, accounts payable processing, balancing department budgets, assisting with month end closing processes, and developing and maintaining a comprehensive financial filing system.  This position will require 20 to 30 hours of work each month.  Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing monthly invoices for software and reporting products
  • Generating monthly statements and collection of past due accounts
  • Process accounts payable invoices including proper general ledger coding, verifying accuracy of charges, and obtaining timely authorization of payment
  • Process receivables by updating Quickbooks account information
  • Monitor and reconcile credit card charges, payment discrepancies, refunds, returns, and miscellaneous charges
  • Maintain W-9 information for vendors and assist with 1099 reporting
  • Reconcile and process employee expense reports
  • Monitoring information technology expenses including proper reporting in fixed assets system.
  • Assist with month end processes including accrual calculations
  • Maintain an orderly financial filing system
  • Assist with annual audit and tax return processing including pulling records for review
  • Other projects as requested

The potential candidate needs to be a self-starter and be willing to work under limited supervision.  In addition, the candidate should meet the following requirements:

Associate Degree in Accounting (Bachelorís Degree in Accounting preferred)

  • 5+ years experience related to bookkeeping, accounts receivable, and accounts payable processing
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and QuickBooks
  • Excellent communication and administrative skills
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills
  • Ability to meet all assigned deadlines
  • Located in the Kansas City area

The pay for this position is $20 to $30 per hour, depending on experience and skills.
